In the state of Hawaii, calcium levels in our water source is extremely high. By the time it reaches a properties residence, it can show a reading of 30-50 ppm! Due to Hawaii’s warm climate and heat, the water in your pool is constantly evaporating. In addition to loss of water through evaporation, every time someone enters and exits the pool, it loses a little bit of water. That being said, the water is consistently being replaced by the automatic water leveler (AWL), also known as an auto fill. Consistent refilling of pools may increase hard water readings (causing calcium levels to increase). The physical appearance of calcium begin to build up on the pool’s water lines and in some cases on plaster, grout, and rock formations. When this happens, there is no other way to reduce calcium levels but to drain and pressure wash the calcium off, or media blast unsightly calcium build up from surfaces.
